Joe Packer

Joe Packer’s recent paintings could be described as invented landscapes with a psychological element. These paintings try to evoke the memory of a place, whilst simultaneously, they evolve through making processes that are not preplanned or prescriptive. The resulting images aim to visually function in a self -contained way, with a kind of inner life of their own. These paintings occupy a kind of hinterland between abstraction, where the brushstrokes are non-referential, and figuration, where the spaces depicted allude and relate to landscape, without being overtly descriptive.

Joe Packer was awarded the Contemporary British Painting prize in 2018. Current and recent exhibitions include Unseen at the Towner Gallery, Eastbourne until May 2023.
