Justin Weeks

Justin Weeks is a contemporary artist who creates paintings and drawings that explore the intersection between nature, abstraction, inner and outer realities. His works are marked by a keen eye for detail and an innovative approach to composition, colour, and form. The works on paper, in this exhibition, are taken from his “lockdown” sketchbooks from early 2020 where his studio practice became a stay-at-home residency and experimentation became paramount.

With an open sense of enquiry and exploring modernist approaches such as Tachisme and automatism, Weeks was able to get these works on paper to the same place as his paintings as he could free himself of the burdens of the materiality and the committed long labour of his oil on canvas pieces. The outcome resulting in these paired down dynamic compositions that rest at the threshold of abstraction and figuration, suggesting but never representing, coming across as simultaneously strange and familiar.

“To me this has a lot to do with our subjective experience in relation to the outside world. Something that can be understood intuitively yet can’t quite be fully recognised, balancing between ambiguity and clarity”.
Justin Weeks is a self-taught artist based in St Leonards on Sea, UK. He is represented by Fairfax Galleries both in the UK and in international Art Fairs including NYC, Singapore, London and Hong Kong.
